How do I use the Vocoder?

OP-1 Fieldtutorialguide

The Vocoder is a synth engine that modulates your input source (like your voice or an instrument) to create robot-like vocal effects or rhythmic textures.

Selecting the Vocoder

Press the synth key, then press SHIFT + T1 to browse synth engines. Scroll with the blue encoder until you see Vocoder, then press T1 or tap the blue encoder to confirm.

Setting Up Your Input

  1. 1.Press the input key to select your input source (built-in mic, line in, FM radio, or USB audio).
  2. 2.Adjust the input gain with the orange encoder so your signal registers clearly on the level meter.
  3. 3.Start playing notes on the keyboard while speaking, singing, or playing your input source. The Vocoder uses your input to shape the synth sound.

Vocoder Parameters

The four encoders control:

  • Blue: waveform selection (changes the carrier signal character)
  • Ochre: formant shifting (adjusts vocal character up or down)
  • Gray: number of frequency bands (more bands = clearer articulation)
  • Orange: mix between dry input and vocoded signal

Tips

For classic robot voice effects, speak clearly into the mic while playing sustained chords. Try different waveforms with the blue encoder to find the tone you like. Increase the gray encoder for more intelligible speech, or decrease it for a more synthetic texture.
