After a format, the factory sounds are not automatically restored. You need to use the EP Sample Tool to transfer them back onto your device.

What to know before formatting

The manual warns that formatting removes all content, including factory sounds, and they cannot be recovered from the device itself. Always back up your sounds and projects using the EP Sample Tool before formatting.

To restore sounds after a format

  1. 1.Connect your EP-40 to a computer using a USB-C cable.
  2. 2.Go to teenage.engineering/apps/ep-sample-tool in your browser.
  3. 3.Use the EP Sample Tool to transfer your previously backed-up sounds and projects back onto the device.

If you did not back up your sounds before formatting, the factory sounds will be permanently lost and cannot be recovered from the device itself. The manual is explicit on this point, so always back up before formatting.
