How do I use the pad/gain switch?
The pad/gain switch is the only physical setting on the CM-15 itself. It adjusts analog gain across all three outputs simultaneously, without any signal-to-noise ratio degradation.
Switch positions
- Far left: -18 dB pad, for loud sound sources
- Center: 0 dB, neutral setting
- Far right: +18 dB gain, for quiet sound sources
Choosing the right setting
Match the switch position to your sound source level. For high-pressure or loud sources like kick drums or close-miked guitar amps, use -18 dB to avoid clipping. For quieter sources like acoustic instruments at a distance or a soft-spoken voice, use +18 dB to bring up the level. The 0 dB center position works well for typical voice recordings at a normal distance.
Additional digital gain in USB mode
If you are using the CM-15 as a USB audio interface, an additional ±12 dB of digital gain is available through your computer's USB interface settings. This is on top of whatever the pad/gain switch is set to.
Tip
The manual recommends slightly angling the mic away from your mouth or a high-pressure source as a natural pop filter effect, and adjusting the switch accordingly based on whatever sound source you are recording.
