How do step components work?

Step components are the OP-XY's unique per-step modulation system:

What are step components?

  • Each step can have modulation data attached
  • Components modify how that step sounds
  • Think of them as per-step parameter automation
  • This is what makes OP-XY sequences so expressive

Types of step components:

  • Pitch — Detune/transpose individual steps
  • Velocity — Volume per step
  • Length — Note duration
  • Probability — Chance a step plays
  • Retrig — Note repeat/stutter
  • Slide — Glide between notes

Adding step components: 1. Select a step that has a note 2. Press the component button 3. Choose which component to edit 4. Turn encoder to set value 5. Component is attached to that step

Viewing components:

  • Steps with components show indicators
  • Different colors/symbols for component types
  • Toggle views to see different parameters

Creative uses:

  • Probability: Add randomness to hi-hats
  • Retrig: Create fills and stutters
  • Pitch: Make bassline slides
  • Velocity: Add dynamics and groove

Tips:

  • Components are per-step, not global
  • Copy steps to copy their components
  • Layer components for complex modulation
  • Use components instead of more tracks

Power move: Add probability to every other hi-hat step (50%) for humanized grooves that never get boring.
