Why do some samples play all the way through and others stop?
This comes down to the play mode setting for each sample. The EP-1320 has three modes that control how a sample behaves when you trigger it.
Play modes explained
You can find and change this setting in sonus edito. Press ALTERO and SONUS to enter sonus edito, then use MINUS and PLUS to navigate to the sonus mode page. Turn KNOBX to switch between the three options:
- Oneshot: monophonic, plays the whole sample from start to finish every time, one at a time.
- Key: polyphonic, holds the sample for as long as you hold the pad, and lets you play multiple instances at once. Great for pitched sounds across a keyboard.
- Legato: monophonic like oneshot, but when you change notes while holding, it continues from the same playback point rather than restarting.
Why this matters in practice
If a drum hit stops short, it is likely set to key mode and you are releasing the pad too quickly. Switch it to oneshot and it will always play through completely. Conversely, if a long loop plays endlessly even after you let go, it is set to oneshot. Switch to key mode to have it stop when you release the pad.
Also worth checking
The envelope release setting can also affect how a sample ends. A short release value will cut the sample off quickly after you let go, regardless of play mode.
