EP-40 Riddim troubleshooting guide

Most EP-40 Riddim problems come down to a muted group, a wrong input source, a mismatched MIDI or sync setting, or a button disabled in Live State. Use the checks below to isolate the cause, then confirm the fix in sound edit or the system menu.

No sound or samples that will not record

If the EP-40 is silent, work outward from the output:

Check the output cable connection and that output volume is not turned down.
Test with headphones to isolate a speaker or cable fault.
Make sure the group is not muted and the FADER-SLIDER is not all the way down.

If a sample will not record, the issue is almost always the input or memory:

Confirm the input source (mic or line in) is selected correctly.
Check the input level with BPM (KnobX) in sample mode.
Make sure memory is not full (128 MB limit) and try a different sample slot.

tip

Press a group pad and watch the fader: a group that looks dead is often just muted or pulled down on the fader.

MIDI and sync not working

MIDI and sync share the same family of problems: wrong cable, mismatched settings, or the wrong protocol.

For MIDI:

Use a Type A TRS-MIDI cable (check the pinout).
Verify the MIDI settings in system (codes 100-141) and confirm channel assignments match the external device.
As a fallback, try MIDI over USB-C instead.

For SYNC:

Match the sync settings on both devices (codes 200-212) and use the correct cable (sync and MIDI cables differ).
For Pocket Operators, set SY1 and use a splitter cable.
For drum machines, select sync24 (code 202).

Buttons not responding or changes not saving

If a button does nothing in Live State, it may be disabled via system settings (codes 900-937); two dots blink when you press a disabled button.

Re-enable the buttons you need through the system menu.

If edits are not saving, stop playback first; auto-save only works when playback is stopped.

Commit sound edits with a 2-second hold of SHIFT + SOUND.

If "lok" appears at startup, lock mode is active and is blocking changes until you turn it off.

USB connection and transfer issues

When the EP-40 will not connect to a computer or transfers fail:

Use a quality USB-C cable with data support, not a charge-only cable.
Provide at least 1A of power.
Try a different USB port on the computer.
Update the firmware if transfer problems persist.

Why is there no sound coming from my EP-40?

Check the output cable, make sure output volume is up, and confirm the group is not muted and the fader is not down. Plugging in headphones helps you tell a speaker or cable fault from a muted group.

Why will my EP-40 not record a sample?

Confirm the correct input source (mic or line in) is selected, set the input level with the BPM knob (KnobX) in sample mode, and make sure memory is not full against the 128 MB limit. Trying a different sample slot can also help.

Why are my changes not saving on the EP-40?

Auto-save only runs when playback is stopped, and sound edits need a 2-second SHIFT + SOUND hold to commit. If "lok" shows at startup, lock mode is active and must be turned off first.

Why does my EP-40 have USB connection problems?

Use a quality USB-C cable that supports data, supply at least 1A of power, and try a different port on the computer. If transfers still fail, update the firmware.
