Play Melodies in Keys Mode on the KO II

Turn any sample into a playable instrument across the keyboard.

  1. Pick a sound to play. Choose a pad holding a bass or melodic note. If you do not have one yet, hold SAMPLE and record a short tone or pluck, then release to assign it to a pad. (Tap the pad: you should hear one clear, pitched note. If it sounds like a drum hit or noise, pick a different pad with an actual tone, since Keys mode works best on sustained pitched material.)
  2. Enter keys mode. Press KEYS to remap the pads so they play your selected sample chromatically, with each pad a half step higher than the last. (Play a few pads in a row: you should hear the same sound rising in pitch step by step. If every pad sounds identical, you are not in Keys mode yet, so press **KEYS** again.)
  3. Play a line. Noodle out a simple bassline or melody on the pads first. When it feels right, press RECORD then PLAY to capture your performance quantized to the pattern. (Let the pattern loop back: you should hear your line play in time on its own. If notes land off the grid, retry the take, since recording snaps your hits to the current timing.)
